Dresden – Tips & Suggestions

Tired of all the sight-seeing of Baroque Dresden? Here are some alternatives.

Yenidze

Dresden, Yenidze The Yenidze building is very unique in Dresden and it feels very different from anything else you see in this city. It had been built 1908-1909 as a factory building and storehouse of the cigarette company ›Yenidze‹ (named after a tobacco town in the former Ottoman Empire). The architect mixed Art Nouveau and Moorish elements and encased the Chimney and the pens as minarets.

Dresden, Yenidze, roof cafe

Since the restoration in 1996 it is used as an office building and houses a restaurant at the top with a 360° view of Dresden. If you are in Dresden on a nice weather day you can even go up to the cafe on top of the roof. The 20 meters high cupola is made of coloured glass and illuminated at night.

Volkswagen’s Transparent Factory

Dresden, Transparent Factory What you see on the right picture (click on it to enlarge) isn’t yet another office building but the ›Gläserne Manufaktur‹ (Transparent Factory) where Volkswagen’s Phaeton is produced behind transparent glass fronts. The factory had been built in the 1990s – within the city next to a residential area. As you can imagine, this new concept of city planning and industrial investments had been disputed vigorously.

As you can see on the satellite picture, the Transparent Factory is situated in the North-West of the ›Großer Garten‹ (Large Garden). It's the largest urban park in the city and got plenty of space where you could relax or do your daily jogging.

By the way, in 2002 Dresden was listed as one of Europe’s greenest large cities; a third of its area is covered by the forested areas called Dresdner Heide. [ Map: Dresdner Heide ]
