About Nice and its gay life

Nice is a millennia-old port city on the French Mediterranean coast, just a few kilometers from Monaco and Italy, and the fifth largest city in France with a population of about 340,000. (Including the surrounding area, there are about one million inhabitants).

Favored by the mild Mediterranean climate in winter and the protected location of the city, Nice became a popular destination as early as the 19th century, initially especially among wealthy Englishmen and the European high nobility. Evidence of this era are the famous Promenade des Anglais and the luxurious Hotel Negresco.

Writers and artists such as Friedrich Nietzsche, Anton Chekhov, Henri Matisse and Marc Chagall also lived and worked here for a time. As an art metropolis and the cultural center of the Côte d'Azur, Nice today offers numerous renowned art museums, major music events and diverse architecture.

Nice is also an attractive destination for many gays and lesbians and a popular place to live. Right in the center of the city you will find various gay bars, clubs and the Centre LGBT Côte d'Azur.

Annual highlights and queer events in Nice are, among others, the carnival in February, the Pink Parade in summer and two LGBT film festivals.
